Effect of Co-doping of MgO and Y2O3 on the structure and properties of transparent alumina ceramics

Abstract：Transparent alumina ceramic sheets were prepared by hydrogen sintering with micro-MgO, composite MgO+Y2O3 (mass ratio of MgO to Y2O3 is 1:1) and composite MgO+La2O3 as sintering assistants. The morphology of ceramic materials was observed by scanning electron microscopy, and the transmittance was measured by spectrophotometer. The effects of the types of sintering aids and the content of MgO+Y2O3 on the transmittance of transparent alumina ceramics were investigated. The results show that the addition of trace rare earth as a sintering assistants can inhibit grain growth, reduce the number of pores in the ceramic sheet, and increase the light transmittance of the alumina transparent ceramic. The transmittance the of the sample with the additive sintering assistant MgO+Y2O3 is significantly higher than the sample with the single sintering assistant MgO. When the contents of the composite sintering assistants MgO+Y2O3 are (0.02% to 0.05%) MgO+(0.02% to 0.05%) Y2O3 (mass fraction), a transparent alumina ceramic sheet with the total light transmittance of 80% or more is obtained. However, when excessive sintering assistants are added, the light transmittance of alumina ceramics will eventually decreases due to the increase in the number of stomata.
